My Girlfriend is Gumiho, TV Ratings/Recap 16 (Sept 30, 2010)

*** UPDATED with recap + major screencap spam ***

I resisted posting this final recap. I was in denial that the drama really ended. But reality hit when Wednesday evening came and there was no episode. So here it is, the final Woong-ah recap. Hoi Hoi! And for anyone still in withdrawal, I have faith that SBS won’t leave us like this. Perhaps they have something in the works?! Please!

NOTE: Please do not re-post without proper credit.

The final episode for My Girlfriend is a Gumiho placed first among the 3 dramas airing at the same time slot! It’s all about how you finish and I’m so glad to see this daebak drama close out with a bang! What a fitting way to end! So looking forward to the DVD! Also if interested, you can check out the ongoing ratings during the 1 hour time slot at this DClsg post. (SBS=yellow; KBS-orange; MBC=green)

Some fans may have wanted or expected to see higher ratings, but again it’s all about context! Again, not to be repetitive, but to see a trendy, niche, more younger audience-targeted drama like this to achieve this type of rating is pretty awesome, especially considering it was going up against family drama Baker King and big action drama Runaway. A better context comparison would be My Girlfriend is a Gumiho ratings, acting, and overall production versus that of Playful Kiss. No explanation needed there; the numbers speak for themselves.

Further, with high interest in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho overseas in addition to the love the drama and in particular DaeWoong-MiHo received in Korea makes the production even more daebak! Really hope to see SeungGi and MinAh promote the drama overseas in the same way SeungGi and HyoJoo did for Brilliant Legacy!

I didn’t get to watch this final episode until late, but it was totally worth it. We got our happy ending but also good angst and heartbreak leading up to it, which made it all the more worthwhile. Who can’t help but to love this adorable Hoi Couple?! We will miss you so much because we nomu nomu nomu jo-ah!

Seunggi did such a great job and seeing him cry along with Miho during those sad scenes were heartbreaking. Seunggi, you make your fans so proud and you bring us to tears with your acting. Can’t wait to see your next acting project!

Per usual, a final Woong-ah recap + major screencap spam…

After demanding that MH answer DW about how many tails she has left, MH shows DW her one remaining tail and says that she was unable to stop losing her tails, meaning that she is slowly dying and will eventually disappear. DW is devastated…

MH says she was unable to give up her desire to become a human; thus, she was unable to stop losing her tails. Further, she doesn’t expect anything from DW at this point and she plans to stay with the Vet. MH says that if she were to stay by DW’s side, she would want him to aid her in becoming a human whereby endangering him. She lies and says that even after they parted, her main desire to be human did not cease. DW grabs her hand and places it on his chest and says he doesn’t care, for MH to go ahead take what she needs for her to survive…

Further, DW angrily commands MH to be a monster-like gumiho and take whatever she needs from him. Realizing that DW will never give up on her, MH coldly says fine and tells DW she will be back for his liver and when she does, then he will die.

MH returns to the Vet’s place and reveals that she took out her bead the day she and DW parted ways. MH says since she can’t become a human nor stay by DW’s side, she has no need for the bead. MH says the bead is the lifeline for DW and thus she wants to protect DW. MH asks Vet to lie to DW about her condition so that DW will not refuse the bead potion.

Vet goes to meet DW and tells him that he must drink the bead potion, as this is the final means in which to save MH; and that DW will die on the 100th day at the hand of the Vet. DW wants assurance from the Vet that MH will definitely live if he drinks the potion, and Vet lies and says she will most likely become a human.

Hoping to still ruin things, Vet plays with DW’s mind and says he understands if DW doesn’t go through with this since he’s a human, but before Vet can even finish his thought, DW immediately drinks the potion without any hesitation…

Afterwards, DW says “Take good care of MH in the meantime, and on the 100th day, only you show up. I trust that you will properly take out the bead and give it to MH.” DW leaves and Vet is totally stunned by DW’s love and commitment to MH.

We see that MH was hiding behind the door and saw everything that went down. MH reminds the Vet that she was not lying when she said that she and DW had a perfect love. Despite having to disappear and leave DW, MH feels completely satisfied knowing DW’s deep love for her.

The next day, thinking he only has days to live, DW thinks of his time with MH and is content and at peace. He cries and says to himself it’s a good thing that although he can’t be by MH’s side, he can make sure she will be protected.

As planned, Vet arrives at the airport to meet MH so they can leave Korea for good. But he confesses to MH that he told DW the truth about her condition, that there is no way for MH to survive. MH is very upset but is also super thankful. Despite how painful the ultimate outcome may be, MH seems to be relieved that the truth is out. And on cue, at that moment, DW runs into the airport. He walks toward MH in tears…

MH asks if she can stay by DW’s side, even if for a short while. Tears. Hug…

Meanwhile, back at the temple and later at the airport, we get our first glance of SamShin Grandma, a pretty good sign that a happy ending is to come! Yay!

Back at the rooftop apt, DW and MH are eating and feeding each other. So cute…

DW offers up a sidedish for MH to eat but she doesn’t want it. But says she’ll eat it if DW gives her a kiss on the cheek…

DW tells her she shouldn’t play around with food and says he’d rather kiss her on the lips! That makes MH uber happy! She says if that’s the case, then she’s going eat all of the different side dishes! Aw!

They’re having a great time. But then as they look at the cups they got for Auntie and Director as a wedding gift, DW and MH are a bit saddened to think they only have a few days together remaining…

Wedding Day for Auntie and Director has arrived. And omg, DW is looking super handsome in his grey suit! (Reminds me of the suit Seunggi wore for the Brilliant Legacy press conference).

DW is best man and MH is one of the bridesmaids. And the way DW has only eyes for MH as she walks down the aisle in front of Auntie (the bride) just melts your heart…

And even after the wedding is about to start, DW can’t help looking at MH…

After the ceremony, DW finds MH wishfully looking at another wedding couple in their traditional Korean outfits. MH reminisces about the time when SamShin Grandma told her she could live as a human if she could find a husband. DW, remembering back to when MH had marked her face with red circles, suggests they take pictures together like that now.

And hence we get these amazingly adorable shots of the cute dimple Hoi Couple…

Soon, the 100th day arrives. DW and MH hold back tears and try to go about the day happily knowing their sad fate. DW hasn’t slept a wink, trying to spend every waking moment by MH’s side.

They decide to see a movie with the tickets that DW’s friend gave him, but realize that the tickets are for the following day. So they decide instead to go pay their greetings to the Ajumma. However, they find out she’s out of town and won’t be back until the next day. To liven up the sad mood, DW and MH decide to re-visit the water fountain. But upon getting there, they find the water emptied out and the place under construction; the workers tell them the fountain will re-open the next day. At this point, DW can’t take it anymore and turns away from MH to let out his uncontrollable tears…

Gathering himself together, DW turns back to MH and says he has a better idea. They go back to the rooftop apt patio and light up some fireworks instead. Unfortunately, for fans, it wasn’t the type of fireworks -jakjiki- we were hoping for! LOL! But it was still amazingly romantic and so sweet…

Afterwards, DW and MH sit together in the gym and decide to say their final goodbyes here since this is where DW first saw MH’s tails. Holding back his tears, DW says he was so scared when he first saw her tails back then, but now that fear is nothing compared to the fear he feels at this moment. So sad…

Now, both DW and MH are in tears. MH covers DW’s eyes and tells him to think of this all as a dream, that this way when they open their eyes, it won’t hurt as much. DW pleads with MH not to leave and MH kisses DW…

DW and MH have their final kiss. And MH’s last tail disappears.

And then MH disappears. DW is left sitting there all by himself, completely crushed, heartbroken, angry, and in tears…

Wallowing in heartbreak, DW has flashbacks of his time spent with MH…

Thinking of MH, DW curls up into a ball and wails in sadness…

Next morning, DW wakes up in the gym where he was the night before. He’s in disbelief that MH is really gone and runs outside searching and calling out for her.

DW stops in the middle of the street and looks up to the sky and is just completely out of it. At that moment a truck comes towards him honking…

The truck eventually crashes into DW, knocking him to the ground. Fox rain falls. DW grabs his heart and says to himself this means that MH hasn’t disappeared.

Fastforward to a some time later and Director and DW’s movie opens to daebak box office results! And DW has become a superstar…

Despite all the success, we see that DW is still always thinking about MH…

DW’s best friend is a director now and DW, as the main lead, is on the set of his film. During the break, DW gets a surprise visit…

It’s the Vet. He is now a professor and trying to interact more with humans. Vet asks DW if he’s still waiting for MH. DW says of course. Vet has a cryptic message for DW. He says there will be an eclipse soon and the heavens will go crazy…

DW decides to wait out the eclipse in his van and review his lines.

All of a sudden, DW hears a phone ring but it’s not his but another phone with the same bead necklace attached. It’s MH’s phone. He’s freaked out. He picks it up and hears MH’s voice.

DW busts out of the van, running to anywhere, yelling into the phone asking where MH is. She says she sees DW, that she’s by his side. But then hangs up.

DW is again devastated and thinks he must be going crazy. He plants himself on some nearby stairs and starts to cry uncontrollably…

But all of a sudden he hears a familiar voice calling his name. He looks up and he can’t believe his eyes…

Standing before him is MH, calling out to him, exactly like when she first came to find him in Episode 1, in front of the school steps.

DW walks toward MH in disbelief, and wonders if she is a ghost.

Seeing that she is for real, DW hugs MH tightly and says it doesn’t matter what she is, whether she’s a ghost, gumiho, or human. Awwww….

Final and last scene. Rooftop apt. Out on the patio. DW and MH.

MH: I’m sorry I made you wait so long.
DW: It’s okay. I was prepared to wait for about 50 years. Thanks for coming back Miho.
MH: Aren’t you curious to know whether I’m a human or gumiho?
DW: I told you it doesn’t matter.
MH: Really? Even if I still have 9 tails, it’s okay?
DW: Of course it’s okay. But I am a little curious.
MH: Since the moon’s out then should we do the hoi hoi signal and then check to see if the tails are there?

They do their special Hoi Hoi signal. DW is thrilled to see MH no longer has tails…

But MH cunningly says she does have one tail left, and a white furry tail comes out of nowhere and wraps around DW’s waist…

DW laughs and playfully kisses MH’s cheek…

And the drama ends with DW’s last line: Indeed, my girlfriend is a fox.

THE END. We will miss you nomu nomu nomu much Hoi Couple!

  1. NUMBER 1! CONGRATULATIONS SEUNG GI-YAH! :D props goes to all cast at crew! it was really worth the wait!

  2. I’ve been following your blog for a while but this is the first time I leave a reply. Just want to thank you for providing info on Seung-gi, esp. the episode ratings for MGIAG, since Drama-wiki doesn’t update the ratings as fast :)

  3. Waiyi – I deleted your comment b/c you always have a way of leaving gloomy comments that ruin the mood. i know you’re a big fan and really sensitive to all things seunggi but today is a celebrating day for the end of a daebak drama and top ratings. hope you can smile about that.

Congrats Seunggi! your acting brought us to tears! :)

  4. It has finally ended…sad because Wednesday and Thursday will be empty again…more dramas to come please Seunggi-ah! Congratulations!

  5. YAY FOR MGIAG PEOPLE! i’m so glad ratings went up, way to go out with a BANG!

and i haven’t watched the episode yet but i’m ecstatic to knw it ended happily.

man. i love lsg. so much. and i love this blog. thanks for all things seung gi!!!

  6. OMO!! OMO!!

What a daebak!!! But what happened????

  7. Gosh! Life is finally back to ‘normal’ for me although sad that I’m going miss the Hoi Hoi couple.

I’m so impressed with seeing gi and minah acting. And I love the scene that lead up to the gym scene. It was so touching and that just by looking at the pix
makes you tear up. And I so love the scenes that it doesn’t matter me whether it was a happy ending. And thank you Ann for all the translations and updates.

  8. Ann, by the way, regarding the drama aired on the same timeslot actually MBC was airing baseball match. Playful kiss was aired one hour later. You will know what I mean you look at the chart.

  9. Ann, do you happen to know if playful kiss aired at a different time slot yesterday? I just read an article quoting playful kiss and happy together’s ratings as competitors in the same time slot. Very strange. But it could explain why its ratings went up.

    • tryp – I just checked the tv schedule for thursday and you’re right. due to a sporting event broadcast on MBC, Playful Kiss aired at 10:25 – 11:25. Happy Together started at 11:15 so it didn’t go up against that show.

Basically PK was still up against MGIG and Runaway for from 10:25-10:55, the first 30 mins of its broadcast.

i was wondering why the ratings were all of a sudden higher too. but if you look at the real time ratings link above during that 1 hour time slot, PK started out strong and then lost steam over time. Since the ratings have been so low for PK, this rating should make them feel better.

now that MGIG is done, SBS new drama is more along the genre-target audience of Runaway, so it’ll be interesting to see if PK can pick up the MGIG viewers.

I read that a lot of PK fans think that koreans aren’t giving PK a chance, but, koreans (based on news articles and netizen comments that i’ve seen) aren’t that interested in the drama and aren’t very compelled by the story nor the acting, and feel that it’s a bit on the “immature” side. so you can’t blame low ratings all on people not giving a drama a chance. then there are other dramas like Road Number 1 with So ji sup and kim ha nuel (a-list actors). low ratings but still was a respected drama b/c of its story and production.

  10. Oh, I meant the increase in playful kiss’s ratings. ^^

    • the PK thread on soompi did mention that PK started airing later than usual because of some other broadcast. Something about football? I”m not too sure but it was def sports related.

  11. Have not watched the episode yet but just too impatient to learn anything new…And rewarded with the great news!

Another early dismissal (self-granted) today so I can sneak home to watch viikii???

Seung Gi ah, I need to learn good work ethics from you!

Sign me up for the DVD. I will get at least two sets I think – one to view until it’s worn out and one to cherish in my treasure box.

  12. some more about ratings –

even though many people don’t like the idea, but ratings ARE super important for many reasons, but mainly because it creates huge Korean press buzz.

for example, the fact that MGIG bested Runaway and bowed out with basically 20% ratings and at the #1 spot in its time slot adds to the incredible buzz the drama was already getting with its final ep. but with it being having top ratings, teh drama and actors are the top searched news items online and so the press continues to put out articles on them.

for example, seunggi and minah and MGIG have all been hitting the #1 searched item. same thing happened when mgig hit those top ratings last week.

  13. “So how was it?” you asked..Seung GiAh – the final episode was fantastic – You are awesome…
The past 2 months together with Cha Dae Woong was a happy & memorable one.. A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO YOU LSGi!
With you we know that The BEST is yet to come! Looking forward to your next movie/drama project…

PS: My family & friends are definitely receiving MGIG DVD and OST as their birthday/christmas presents! kekeke…

  14. never said this earlier, but thanks a lot for this site. glad I found this place :D

must say i’m impressed by the hong sisters. solar eclipse … ha !

initially, i found the drama a bit ‘cheesy’ in the beginning especially the director ban’s scenes. but started to like him and dw’s aunt more later.

the hoi couple needless to say were fantastic. what an adorable couple, even the ending suits them just right to the spot too.

sigh, all the anticipation, all the waiting for each episode to be aired and it’s finally ended. suddenly there’s this emptiness :p

great job by all the cast and their production crew ! hurray too for the increase in viewership ratings !!

  15. so it wasn’t that disappointing right? i’m glad it ended nicely, haven’t watch it yet so looking foward to it

  16. LOL…daewoong got the bead and miho still have one tail left..so they will really live up to the saying living happily ever after right?…a true fantasy-romantic drama ending…almost like disney’s one…keke

anyway, love the drama ending.., LSG’s acting when MiHo was gone is the best…I felt that one, its bad for my health since I cried, stop and then cried again throughout the drama..haha

  17. im still feeling so exicted about watching this drama but then i realise its all over, i watched like 14 episodes in 1 day then 15 and 16 on the second O.O

  18. I’m happy with the ending; definitely worth the ending for the Hoi~Hoi Couple… It’s just sad that now, we won’t get to see the Hoi~Hoi couple anytime soon…

    But…

The ending did kind of open up doors for MGIAG … could there be a MGIAG Special in the works? I’m hoping that they’d make a MGIAG special, but only if it can top off Episode 16… Or even a MGIAG “The Sitcom” … but probably only if the Hoi~Hoi couple is there.

  19. Show, I wish I could quit you!

I don’t mind if they just wash dishes it would still be interesting becaus this couple is simply the BEST drama couple OF ALL TIME!!…..I am always using quotes from this drama with my sister who watched it too!….I am really going to miss this drama!
