Congrats to the entire My Girlfriend is a Gumiho team for pulling in strong, steady ratings.  It’s pretty much a given that Baker King’s ratings are unbeatable and most seem to realize that due to the genre differences, target audiences, and current time slot competition, it is totally unrealistic to see Seunggi and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho pull in super duper high ratings like that of Brilliant Legacy.

Seunggi has already proven himself to be a ratings star so I’m just so ecstatic that he’s getting tons of recognition for his acting!  As an actor, that’s definitely most important.  And although ratings are important too, because the drama itself has already received tons of critical praise for its production as a whole, I think they’re all feeling pretty good about it, as they should! :)

Per usual, as an LSG fan blog, highlights of a very charismatic Woong-ah~

Thank you Hong Sisters for helping us to fall back in love with Daewoong by showing that he is sensitive and has the potential to really care for Miho.  A lot of people were upset with how DW was treating MH – I think mainly b/c most of us were seeing everything through MH’s eyes, and didn’t really give DW’s perspective a chance.  All the eps kept emphasizing that MH is not a human but a nine-tailed fox, and DW unable to see her affections for him as that of a human because of that.

But Ep 7 really makes it much more clear that each time DW starts to think of her as a girl, he has to stop himself and remind himself that she is not a human.  Agh, MH needs to tell him that she can become human soon so that he can let himself go and fall for her!!!!  With each ep, I just can’t get enough of DW and MH’s chemistry. I don’t remember the last time I saw this type of particular couple in a kdrama!

I was getting goosebumps when DW whizzed right past Noona and went looking for MH to make sure she was okay!  Yay!  He was so freaking worried, especially after seeing her scratch, but then MH had to spoil the moment and remind him that she is a gumiho and not human so jumping off the rooftop is no big deal. Agh. And DW does the honest and responsible thing and grabs ahold of MH in front of Noona and says that he  has to be with MH for now, simple as that!

Upset at having to send Noona away, DW ponders the mess he’s gotten himself into and thinks long and hard whether to put the ring back on. MH feels terrible about this. She comes to shield DW from the rain by holding up the action school sign she ruined during her jump.

Lost in deep thought, DW finally notices that it’s raining and that MH’s been holding up the sign to shield him.  He asks if she’s tired to which he has to remind himself that she’s not human and so she has supernatural strength (DW doesn’t realize she’s slowly losing that strength as she slowly becomes human). He looks at her cutely and decides to have a good attitude about the 100 days together. And the too cute for words scene of DW shielding MH from the rain with the sign as they head back inside…  Awwwww!

Once inside, DW and MH work on fixing the broken action school sign. Just love DW’s simple fitted long t-shirt outfit here! It really shows off his great body which I know Seunggi hates to expose! LOL.

DW also attends to MH’s arm wound, reminding her not to eat the medical cream. Ha. MH lies and says she has other wounds so he’ll attend to her more. Cute. And even tries to persuade DW that hugging her bead (inside DW’s chest) is the best medicine for her wounds! But to her dismay, DW doesn’t seem to fall for it this time. The simple scenes of DW and MH together are simply lovely…

Drunk Action School teacher ends up crashing at the rooftop apartment so DW and MH decide to sleep in the gym room for the evening.  Again more simple scenes of the two together = love…

MH starts asking DW about stories and movies that involve non-humans. DW shares a few stories, one being a vampire lore. Loved how these fantasy sequences were inserted without feeling over the top and silly.  Very hot…

DW shares a few stories but they don’t have happy endings.  MH asks if there’s one where a non-human wants to become human. DW can’t think of any. MH says she’ll ask the Vet since the Vet is really smart and knows everything. Mention of the Vet makes DW very jealous (!) and he suggests they just go to sleep!

Another too cute for words scene… DW sleeps on the mattress and MH sleeps on a mat on the floor.  By morning time, DW is sleeping towards the edge of the mattress and MH tries to get him to fall off so he can be next to her.  He eventually falls on the mat and MH wraps his arm around her while DW is still sleeping! Too cute!

MH shows DW the Korean version of the Little Mermaid book the Vet bought her since it’s a story about someone wanting to become human. She tells DW she hasn’t finished reading it yet but that she hopes the mermaid will live happily ever after…

DW goes on a shopping spree and even buys MH her own cellphone with a crystal bead phone necklace.  This scene is another great scene as DW surprises MH with the gift by telling her to go inside and find her present.  He then calls the cellphone while she’s inside! So sweet.  And he even had a special ringtone (I want beef) installed as well as mermaid screensaver! He also buys her some expensive meat.

That night DW has  hard time sleeping. He’s worried about MH finding out the sad ending to the mermaid story and even wonders why the Vet bought chose a sad story for her to read. DW tears out the last few pages so MH won’t get to read the sad part…

The next morning, MH is upset that the book’s pages are gone. DW pretends that the book is defective and tells MH that she doesn’t have to read the ending because it has a happy ending so she has nothing to worry about…

DW tells her there’s a movie version of the book (Disney’s the Little Mermaid) and that it has a very happy ending. Since MH’s never been to a movie, the two decide to go see a movie.  They do a double date with DW’s friends and MH shows up with a special perm…

While DW gets drinks, his friends tell her that the mermaid story has a sad ending. She goes to the bookstore to check this out and realizes it’s true. She returns to find Noona talking with DW. Sad to see this, she leaves and goes back up the elevator. But DW goes and finds her sitting with the new book. He closes it for her. And DW says: Just trust me. There’s a happy ending.

OMG! Woong-ah, you’re so cool!  Can’t wait for the next ep!  There’s been some murky details about a supposed labor union strike but it looks like there will be an ep 8 tomorrow! Yay!

As for Playful Kiss – I made sure to watch Ep 1 since everyone’s been saying that Gumiho and Kiss are both trendy dramas targeting a similar audience.  I didn’t see the original versions  and might be like the only person that did not watch Boys Over Flowers! LOL.  In this case, Playful Kiss seem so Nickelodeon, ABC family channel, After School tween sitcom in comparison to My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, and that’s only if you just compare the two premiere episodes.  If that’s the primary goal for Playful Kiss, then that’s great, but I personally found it hard to take seriously all the over-the-topness and the choppy insertion of irrelevant storylines and scenes in between. Not much anticipation from one scene to the next.

But lead actress Jung So Min showed off some amazing acting chops!  She’s going to be a star!  As for Hyunjoong… I had read a lot of criticism about his acting.  No doubt, he looks the part in Playful Kiss, but would love to see him own the part.  Yes, he’s supposed to be a stuck up snob but how come he barely moves his mouth when he talks nor makes any movement when he acts.  During that dream sequence when he’s surrounded by all those bad guys, I cringed watching him trying to act scared; that is, amongst other cringe-worthy scenes. Unfortunately, it seemed more even more noticeable because the other cast members’ acting was so much better.

Yes, everyone says KHJ’s hot.  I like hot guys too, but personally he doesn’t do much for me, mainly because what makes a guy really hot is additional talents, intellect, and confidence and success in the work they are doing on top of his looks. I hope KHJ improves over time.   But since we’re talking about dramas, the main goal for most actors and production teams is to be respected for strong acting, compelling script, the drama as a whole, right?  In that case, setting aside being a fan of Seunggi, the Playful Kiss drama seems to really pale in comparison to My Girlfriend is a Gumiho in terms of acting, script, and overall production.

  1. Oh, Ann…I can sleep well now! I know BK is unbeatable, I’ve fully accepted that now…but Gumiho remained steady! Yey! I was worried about PK affecting MGIG, but it did not…and I’m so thankful! Yes, ratings are not all! The fact that Seunggi and Minah are getting praises all around, in Korea, and internationally, that more than makes up for the ratings! Still fantastic numbers I would say…Seunggi is on four times a week…and people still love and support all his shows! The recaps wow, it’s like you’re making it a regular thing already…thanks, a million thanks, no, a gazillion thanks!!! Seunggi forever!

  2. aww. Vikii haven’t upload the Sub yet.. -_-
    still waiting for the sub..
    why is the rating low??
    because of Playful kiss aired??
    sigh!~~

  3. Ann, thanks for the good news. It’s harsh to say, but I do feel good seeing PK have zero effect on MGIG. I will have to watch the ep later… Seunggi ia definitely the hottest guy if going by your criteria, which I 110% agree. He’s very admirable, which explains why it’s hard for anyone to not like him. Hard work and sincerity do pay him well

  4. Playful kiss rating is lower!! ^^ 3% hehehehe YAY!!

  5. Ann, I have not watch BOF too. Thanks for the 1st hand info on the ratings. I can stop my worrying over PK taking some viewers away from MGIG.

I was just thinking, if the labour union strike were to proceed, SBS can show rerun of MGIG from ep01 and all the BK viewers will catch it this time and the ratings would be awesome! Nice thought eh?

  6. hey! purpl2d1n that was what I’ve thinking this 2 days. hehe! And I’ve to agree. with everything you said.

    Seunggi fighting! MGIG fighting!

  7. OMG! i nearly had heart attack this morning..haha.. i was so worried for the rating.. but i think we still have to monitor PK’s rating for today’s episode..

and i hope SBS solve the issue regarding the union strike ASAP.. if MGIAG do not get to broadcast next week, i’m going to write in to SBS Station…. (KBS solved their issues 3minutes before the labour union press con yesterday and will not be affected)…

  8. lol…so many supporters here…what is the differences between agb and tns ratings? ive always relies on the ratings of tns cause they shows the higher percentage…but this time agb shows an improvement and tns…well…is it possible to upload the ratings minute by minute? to see where it peaked and so on…ann? Ive seen it somewhere…

  9. chessy03, they are different companies so they may have differences between how many households they do their research and/or what areas they do their research.

If you pay agb, you can see the rating minute by minute as the drama is showing on tv, but that rating shows only some part of Seoul. Fans do pay to see the rating and upload in some sites.

  10. AGB and TNS ratings —

I don’t know the exact details. But AGB is the one typically used by the press and the more accepted public rating. I believe it’s because it’s more accurate than TNS; something having to do with how homes are counted in the final calculations.

as for peak ratings (like what they use when reporting 1n2d single ratings and how a certain scene had the highest rating) — personally, i find that sort of one time measure artificial.

like as if ppl all of a sudden turned on the tv and that’s supposed to be some quality measurement of the best scene/moment of an entire show?! as for minute by minute and trend ratings, like what they use a lot in marketing research, i think that’s more accurate and interesting.

  11. My Girlfriend is a Gumiho ~~ Fighting!!!
    Lee Seung Gi ~~ Fighting!!!

  12. i think the reason why playful kiss got a low (very) ratings is because (no offence to KHJ fans, i find him hot too) is because all the actors/actress on the drama acts well except for KHJ. He is one of the hottest if not the hottest kpop idol i have ever seen, but his acting sucks. sorry………………..
