Congrats Seunggi, Hodong and Strong Heart! Great ratings again!  Things PD Park is doing that indicates he’s listening to the constructive criticism and continually trying to make the show better:

Not inserting those lame out-of-sequence cuts of guests hysterically laughing.  Thank you! He must of cringed watching last week’s ep.

Trying to show as many of the guests as possible, even if brief. Still lots of criticism for having too many guests on.  But you can tell they made a concerted effort to make the show about all the guests, and not just Se7en.  (I was really loving all of se7en’s stories!)

Taking a more natural approach to the show.  K-variety shows are notorious for being scripted but SH definitely has become one of the top shows where guests and the MCs (Hodong in particular) feel at ease opening up and talking honest about things.

The ad-hoc approach is a plus because guests end up revealing unplanned comments and honest feelings.  And that underlying tension can be really fun. But sometimes, it feel like it’s too much, that people have crossed the line. Like to what degree is it okay for guests to reveal private conversations involving other people or their deep true feelings about their colleagues?

When Se7en shared the story about how Top put in extra lifts in his shoes without telling him before their duet performance and how it took him aback a bit… It was honest but still light enough and funny. And it led to Etuk and Eunhyuk proudly showing off their shoe lift insoles!

But when actress Han Chae Ah was talking about her drama partner,  seated next to her, and how she wasn’t too thrilled to be matched up with an ajusshi and that his demeanor and his skin weren’t so hot… that just seemed rude. And of course the guy to save his own dignity didn’t have such hot words for her in return. Very uncomfortable to watch the whole thing go down.

And the awkward (but funny) Hodong-Seunggi-Minho moment…

Basically this is what went down – MinHo shares a story about a private conversation he had with Hodong. MH was filming his last ep for Star King as a regular panelist and he and KHD happened to be in the bathroom at the same time.  KHD gave MH some variety tips.  He also complimented the young MH saying there is a glimmer in his eyes and a manliness about him. And then according to MH, KHD laughingly said:

“Minho, after 2 years when you’ve become more successful, perhaps you’ll be standing next to me instead of Seunggi!”  And then MH, looking at MCs KHD and LSG, said perhaps I’ll be standing there in 2 years!

Seunggi feigned(?) discomfort by taking sip of his water and KHD played a nervous look!  Ha. A guest joked that as Seunggi becomes more successful, KHD will probably ask to be by his side!  KHD jokes that was something he told MH in private, not in front of Seunggi and that now MH has put Hodong hyung in an awkward position. Seunggi wittily responds to Hodong that they should just simply work hard together… only for 2 years! Ha.

This exchange totally didn’t seem planned but then I can’t imagine MinHo sharing a story like that without mentioning it to Hodong first.  Very curious to know whether this part was scripted.  Anyway, it was both awkward and funny. Not sure if I liked what went down, just because there’s so much already being written/said about Hodong-Seunggi.  And I wouldn’t want other people’s comments to influence their great hyung-dongseng relationship.  Video clip with English translations forthcoming later!

Quirky Ms. Korea 2010 story – Recently crowned 20-year old Ms. Korea was a guest and she revealed that she has a pet snake that she calls her son, in addition to a cat, hamster, gerbil, etc… I know we all love the cute girl who’s quirky but this seemed ick. She also mentioned that she had really wanted to meet Hodong as he is her ideal type to which Seunggi joked that made sense since she loved animals so much! LOL.

Guests: Se7en, Ms. Korea 2010, Shinee’s Key and Minho, various actors, and others.

  1. thanks for the recap..^^ I don’t think I will watch this ep. of SH.. I have things to say.. but I will save my words..

  2. if any of you guys saw the ep, it was weird. i’ve been (and still am) one of hodong’s biggest supporters… not just b/c he’s good to seunggi but bc i think khd is really hard working and talented. and even though i like yoo jaesuk’s personality better, i think hodong is the more talented mc in getting ppl to talk and share.

but something about the strong heart ep and… i don’t know. it just felt weird. in reality, of course hodong and seunggi can’t be together forever, esp since seunggi has 2 other jobs outside of mcing (acting and singing). and hopefully seunggi will move on later on. and there have been times that I would love to see seunggi with MC Yoo more (i love them on happy together each time). And of course hodong should mentor other guys too… and seunggi should start mentoring younger guys later on…

but hodong saying something like that to minho in private and also bringing up seunggi’s name like that just made me feel a bit weird. and i think seunggi was taken aback by it too but tried to play it off by making a joke.

hodong is sort of infamous in k-industry to have a sort of scary and moody personality, a lot of that b/c he’s so sensitive deep inside. like the way he treats mong on 1n2d still makes me cringe!

I know hodong’s been a great mentor and hyung to seunggi but knowing his sort of moody personality, i sometimes feel bad for seunggi since hodong is his 17 year sunbae, it’s not like can get all the things off his chest and say what he really feels most of the time. He has to go along with what hodong wants to do most of the time.

even the other veteran MCs who’ve worked with hodong and others mentioned on strong heart a few weeks back, that they can only imagine how hard it is for seunggi to work with hodong on a regular basis. this is why i’m so glad seunggi has so many other things going on outside of variety and is doing well in it, esp acting; things apart from hodong’s involvement.

  3. Well Ann, it seems to be me that a lot of the idol group members are eyeing on it. As for Minho, good for him or whoever that are so keen to be at the position. I think to be a MC for a talk shows is totally a different thing. I’ve nothing against KHD. I guess he felt that he needs to mentor other younger guys from his other shows too. As for Minho, if he wants to be a good MC, I think he should learn to be more sensitive to what he is to say unless it is all scripted. If that is the case, then writer need some wake up calls.

  4. I haven’t watched this episode of SH. But the issue seems interesting. I’m wondering, when was this episode recorded? If I’m not mistaken, this ep must be recorded the day after the 1st episod of Mgig was aired. If it’s true, then that could hurt seunggi’s feeling because he was just got disappointing ratings from mgig..

Well,I wish that situation is only based on the script..

  5. what can I say about this…the show this time seems balanced…ok

  6. hi, i really enjoy your recaps, checking out this website has become one of my must-do things everyday, thanks so much for your hard work, btw, i’m really curious about what you mention in your comment about “ike the way he treats mong on 1n2d still makes me cringe”; can you tell me a little bit more about what happened in the show please, i’m dying to know, thank you

    • Glad you’re enjoying. these blogs posts are way more fun and quicker than writing papers that take weeks to see the light of day!

as for mong — KHD is notorious for hitting Mong on the show, perhaps his way of showing affection for mong. and the other members have commented that Mong asks for it b/c he jabs at hodong for that type of attention. even as a seunggi fan, when i see how rough and sort of sometimes even mean he is with mong, compared to that of seunggi, i really feel bad for mong. mong just wants to be loved. maybe a bit too much sometimes, but still he just wants to be loved :)

      • oh, i really didn’t expected you to reply me so soon, thank you
and since i am a huge fan of 1N2D, i really thought something bad happened in the show, thanks for letting me know, as for hodong, sometimes i don’t appreciate that much the way he’s treating mong neither his overboard jokes (even if it was to make it more entertaining or the concept of ” hodong-mong relationship” in the show), once in a while, i wonder if the members ever feel offended or hurt from his remarks but since the audience ‘s still enjoying it, guess i’m oversensitive, as for seungi, he really the most talented, well-rounded artist in the showbiz, his attitude towards life inspired me alot, i feel so ashamed thinking about the things he was able to achieve in24h/day compared to me hic
And thanks again for sharing your thought with me
        have a sweet day
