Everyone knew that all the press articles anticipating SeungGi to repeat his Brilliant Legacy 47% ratings again with My Girlfriend is a Gumiho was pretty unrealistic considering that the two projects are completely different genres targeting different age groups.  BL being a family drama for all ages while MGIG a more trendy romantic-comedy-melodrama aimed at younger audiences, meaning people that typically tend to watch almost everything online when it’s convenient!  And more than that, last year, BL wasn’t going up against a 44%+ ratings goliath like Baker King already that had already established itself even before MGIG had aired.

So given this context, the improvement in ratings for Episode 3, even if more slight for AGB, is really great news!  And hope to see a slow rise over time.  Based on rerun ratings from Sunday, we know that a lot of people may be watching Baker King on Wednesday-Thursdays, but they’re making sure to tune in to watch My Girlfriend is a Gumiho for the rerun broadcast.

Ok, some DaeWoong highlights from the master of expressions SeungGi~

Having to choose between MiHo and HaeIn noona.  I wasn’t too into HI after seeing her snippet last week, but she plays the role well.  I don’t get the sense that she’ll be as conniving as Moon Chae Won’s character from BL, but who knows… what more than jealousy to get girls all riled up and competitive!

While DW’s trying to convince MH to let him go, HI noona takes off in her stylish infiniti convertible which then leaves DW and MH to take the bus home.  But on the bus, DW catches MH joking biting a little kid’s arm, just like how her mom was doing.  DW freaks out and they get off the bus b/c he thinks she’s trying to eat the child! ha. MH’s response: Why would I try to eat a little kid when I could eat something much more bigger in size like you! MH shows how the mom was only displaying biting/eating aegyo to which DW copies her and realizes he had misunderstood…

Dream sequence of noona coming to find him at the rooftop and making the moves on him, and just when they’re about to kiss, DW opens his eyes to find that it’s not noona but scary MH who’s now about to choke him and eat him!  Fortunately, he wakes up to find his hands around his own neck and realizes it was only a bad dream…

It’s the day of the audition and so he’s choosing what to wear and he asks MH for advice and she points out that she likes the brown shirt b/c it’s the color of a cow! LOL. And he points out the other colors then must represent pig and chicken…
(side note to SeungGi’s cody~ Really, you had these bright stylish shirts to choose from and you ended up dressing him in that crazy ajusshi style, wide collared blazer?! Seriously, what is your deal?!)

And then by far the best scene in ep 3. The bus scene with DW and MH?!

This adorable DaeWoong-MiHo couple is so brimming with chemistry that I just want even more of them when they weren’t in scenes together.  The ongoing theme of MH’s bead connecting her and DW somehow makes me forget that we’re talking about a nine-tailed fox and a human here – because it feels so real and SeungGi and MinAh do such a great job of making me believe that their characters are real!

And lastly, Daewoong, I know you were extremely mad that you weren’t able to save the day for your noona by getting the dress to her on time, and that you had to also miss your own audition, but to take Miho out to the cruise boat knowing that she’s deathly afraid of the sea, was really really mean!  Looking forward to seeing you redeem yourself in Ep 4 Woong-ah!

  1. hmmm…after todays episode maybe it will reach 16%? then the re-run will score 20%? is it asking too much? hope my prediction can come true this time…hehe

  2. I haven’t got the chance to watch ep 3, but I’m happy the drama continues to do well. I’m loving it

Thanks Ann for the speedy update.

  3. Does SeungGi sleep? He’s already tweeting early in the morning. He said that he was happy to see that the ratings had gone up and that he thanked everyone for that. And said that DaeWoong should be punished for abandoning MiHo, and for all of us to anticipate ep 4.

I know it’s pretty close to impossible not to focus on the ratings, but hope seunggi doesn’t feel too much pressure about it. he’s got this high profile drama, high profile Strong Heart and 1n2d to film… how does he do it??!!!

Also, hope Capt Hook realizes that it is true that hard work does not betray us but to assume that there’s only one way to measure success and that being one tv ratings number is absolutely ridiculous and a bad way to live your life!

glad to see seunggi and teh drama getting so much love and everyone rooting for him! :)

  4. Poor Seung gi..its unfair that people put so much expectation on him because of what he got from BL..

I agree with you Ann….MGIG is totally in different genre with BL..furthermore we already have Baker King which already being people’s favorite for quite sometimes now, its quite difficult for MGIG to beat that…
But, seeing the increasing rating..I’m sure the sun will rise sooner but slowly .. :)

    SEUNG GI SHI…FIGHTING!
NO MATTER WHAT..WE ALWAYS ROOT FOR YOU!

  5. Seunggi ya…! Fighting!!
    I’m waiting the next episode!!
You have tried so hard, and I think you’ll get the best with it!

  6. Theres something that pick my interest…isn’t the drama The Gumiho’s Revenge, kinda ruin the image of gumiho? and thats been aired right before MGIG right? can this be kbs’s strategies of blocking the sbs’s drama success? you know..theres been many talk lately of entertainment politics..especially with broadcasting station…how can they be two drama of the same story be made at the same year? why didnt they made it last year or even next year? I’ve watched the gumiho’s revenge just a little bit, and I kinda have different impression now about the character that is gumiho, and thats ruin my joyful feeling about the drama, I shouldn’t have watch the drama from kbs, sigh…but it must’ve been only me thinking too much..i’m always like that, i’ve been thinking about this since the news of both drama came out last year…mmm..now i’m being too serious, no matter, i’ll just enjoy watching MGIG only after this..lol

  7. actually it’s not that uncommon to see similar storyline dramas happening around the same time. and interestingly, this is the second time for seunggi being involved in something like that.

older fans prob can explain more on this… and if you’re an older fan you prob already know this…

for the newer fans, he was supposed to be the lead in saguek iljimae a few years back and it was supposed to be his lead vehicle for 2008 following his turn in famous princesses drama. but it was riddled with a lot of issues. and also lee junki (and coincidentally han hyo joo) had already started doing an iljimae version on another channel that was getting much love. eventually seunggi pulled out, even after he had all that martial arts training, the reason was said to be that the filming locales and travel interfered with his 1n2d filming. the role eventually was played by jung ilwoo.

anyway, this sort of same topic/genre thing also happens in hollywood all the time. def there are some politics involved in that anyone knows that any buzz is better than no buzz, so kbs gumihos revenge def benefited from all the talk about MGIG…

but from what i’ve read the gumiho’s revenge is a really well-done production and it’s getting a lot of love overseas too. and ppl seem to get that the 2 dramas are really different and not comparing the two anymore.

  8. Thank you for the reply ann…I knew about the iljimae casting, but didn’t know the details…well, to each his own I guess…
