August kdrama showdown among 1986er tigers

Yoon Shi Yoon goes up against fellow “tigers” Lee Seung Gi and Kim Hyun Joong
(Article: AsiaToday; English translation: LSGfan.wordpress.com)

Can rookie Yoon Shi Yoon win over “ratings certified” Lee Seung Gi and “Boys over Flowers” Kim Hyun Joong?

Since debuting a year ago, Yoon Shi Yoon has taken over in his first lead role in the Wednesday-Thursday drama “Baker King Kim Tak Goo.”  His drama is getting a lot of attention for beating out dramas in the same time slot, MBC’s “Road Number One” and SBS’s “Bad Guy” and maintaining its number one position.

Before its broadcast, the drama was overshadowed by the showy casting of Bad Guy’s Kim Nam Gil and Han Ga In and Road Number One’s So Ji Sup and Kim Ha Neul.  However, it was able to reach 30% viewership rating by its 6th episode.  And due to its popularity, it is most likely that it will be extended despite originally being slated for 30 episodes.

Having beat out So Ji Sup and Kim Nam Gil, Yoon Shi Yoon will be facing round 2 this coming August.  This time there will be a Wednesday-Thursday showdown with fellow “year of the tiger” peers (1986 birth years) Lee Seung Gi and Kim Hyun Joong.

Lee Seung Gi will be matched up with Shin Min Ah in the new SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.”  This romantic comedy tells the story of a guy who releases a legendary nine-tailed fox that ends up living with the guy, and it comes from the Hong Sisters writing team, also behind “You’re Beautiful” and “Fantasy Couple.”  Although he is afraid that the gumiho will take his liver, he can’t help but to fall in love with her.  It will follow the drama Bad Guy.

SS501 group member Kim Hyun Joong make his drama comeback in the new MBC Wednesday-Thursday drama “Playful Kiss.”  He received a lot of love through his role as “JiHoo sunbae” in 2009’s KBS drama “Boys over Flowers.”  In “Playful Kiss,” Kim Hyun Joong will aim to captivate women again through his character that’s always been number one, good at everything he does, and your all around uhm-chin-ah.  A huge hit in Japan, “Playful Kiss” tells the story of a 200 IQ guy who meets a clumsy, not so bright girl and the relationship that develops between the two.  It will follow the MBC drama Road Number One.

Thus, there is a lot of interest as to whether Yoon Shi Yoon, as he did with So Ji Sup and Kim Nam Gil, can win the Wednesday-Thursday tv ratings with Lee Seung Gi and Kim Hyun Joong as well.  Regarding the Wednesday-Thursday battle, Yoon Shi Yoon said, “I’m not going to bow my head because of the battle or people’s expectations for me, nor do I want to lift my head high because I pass with flying colors, but I will try hard to just to continue as we have been doing, running and looking forward.”

For ratings-obsessed Korea, look for the storyline of the showdown among 1986er tigers, Yoon Shi Yoon, Lee Seung Gi, Kim Hyun Joong to be played out on a regular basis in the press and gain a lot of netizen interest in the days to come.

As fans of SeungGi worry about the pressures he must be feeling to pull in ratings for My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, you realize that Yoon Shi Yoon and Kim Hyun Joong also have an equal amount of pressure riding on their backs, although Yoon Shi Yoon probably the least out of the bunch as he is more of a newbie.  But his drama definitely has an advantage as it has already built up a regular audience by the time the other dramas premiere.

And definitely for HyunJoong, tons of pressure for him as to whether he’ll be able to carry a drama as the main lead and also combatting some widespread views about his acting skills.  And for SeungGi, a lot of pressure as to whether the Gumiho drama can produce super high ratings like that of Brilliant Legacy.

Also, just to make the upcoming Wed-Thurs drama picture more complete… Rain’s drama comeback in KBS “the Fugitive” will broadcast after Baker King Kim Tak Goo ends…

I’m just hoping as fans of Seunggi, that we don’t become too consumed or obsessed with the competition that the drama may or may not face… that’s unnecessary and unproductive stress guys, ok?!  :)

  1. this year drama is more worsing than last year.
too many popular singers and actors come back to drama..
it’s very hard to beat their rating..
if seung gi didn’t get award next time after drama.
thats the most painful feelings for him..

    • okay as a fellow fan, i really think you should try to look at the bright side of things and think positively… or else you will make yourself sick! :) LOL. remember, why you are a fan and this should help you to think more on the positive and sunny side, ok :)

  2. i’m not really stressed out by this :D. super-busy Lsgi wont let me be. but i must admit i do feel worried everytime thinking about it. my hope, it will at least be a tough competition, more like PT-CS-PP instead of IRIS-YB-(cant remember the other one). but whatever it will be, my biggest hope right now, can August come already!?! just so cannot wait anymore to watch the drama!

  3. I really don’t like when all the press try to put more pressures on the poor guy, specially LSG (compare MGIG with BL).

Ah!!why? can they just give him a break!!!!.
We all know he is trying so hard to become a better actor.

For us his fan, does it matter how the rating will turn out (low or high) we still love the guy…..and still watch MGIG, right? :)

  4. I really don’t like the way the press or fans in Korea put everything into competition, war zone like.
Fans of one artist become anti fans of others. It’s just weird and unhealthy.
I’ll support my fav no matter what, at the same time i will enjoy other artists’ works, and praise them if possible. Good luck to all three.

  5. I have confidence in Seung Gi.
For me, as long as Seung Gi turns out good in his acting for MGIG, I am happy. ;p

  6. this rating battle is interesting since you need strong competitors to improve yourselves. However, that doesn’t worry me. Even if the rating for MGIG is low, I’ll still enjoy it. What worries me is how they’ll make this drama, the director, screenwriters and actors, actresses,… Crossing fingers now, plz turn out to be a good drama~

  7. After watching BL and now all these still photos, I only have one thing to say about him. This boy is a born actor. He can be serious in one drama and so comical on other drama. And just by looking at the photo make me laugh. And I can’t wait for the drama to be aired. LSG! fighting!

  8. I think it’s only natural to want the best for Seunggi as we are all his fans, and we also worry about everything he’s involved in. I want his drama to do well so he won’t feel disappointed or sad if it doesn’t perform rating wise. He’s a perfectionist and tend to be hard on himself. That’s my biggest worry.
But I’ll enjoy the drama regardless.

    Seunggiah, fighting! MGIGMH, fighting!

    And a CUTIE-PIE too!
    Ke Ke Ke~~~
